Extended family session port fairy
Extended family sessions are fast becoming a favourite of mine; seeing families all come together, have fun and share their stories and joke around, makes my day!
Below is some information about extended family sessions with me and some photos from one I’ve done recently at their family farm just outside Port Fairy.
Before Your Session
I will help you plan all of the details; the date, time, location, your outfits and what to bring along.
I will also send you a questionnaire to complete a week before, so that I can get to know a bit about your family before we meet. This helps me get to know who’s who and plan your session based on the information you give me.
During Your Session
To begin with, everybody is in the photo, after that I separate you all into your individual families, followed by the grandparents with their kids/grandkids, siblings, cousins, couples, individual photos of the kids and any other combinations you would like and that we’ve discussed leading up to your session.
While I do pose your family, I also love to capture the ‘in between’ moments, there’s something extra special about these moments, so during your session, you will see me randomly pointing my camera at different people to catch those candid moments!
Session Location
A lot of my extended family sessions are held at the grandparents home or somewhere special to the family, although, I have the perfect spot if you would prefer a different location.
What Should We Wear?
I find that neutrals such as creams, tans and light greys always look great paired with a pop of colour – ideally choose 2-3 colours and coordinate them through your family - it’s best to coordinate colours, but try to avoid matching.
A variety of patterns, solid colours and textured clothing always looks great as well.
A few tips; it’s best to:
- Remove hair ties, Apple watches, fitbits etc. from wrists, and phones, keys or anything else from your pockets, so that they aren’t seen in the photos
- Wear neutral coloured shoes
- Be mindful of any under garments you may be wearing make sure they can’t be seen through your outfit and choose any that won’t need adjusting or be uncomfortable throughout your session

After your session
I will send you a sneak peek of your photos within 48 hours and have the remaining photos to you within 3 weeks. These are provided to you digitally via a private online gallery where you can share them with your family and friends.
You can also print your photos straight from your gallery, either as loose prints or you can design your very own album (or I can design it for you!), which is always fun to have on the coffee table to flick through and share with visitors
